what the head thinks, the hand puts down

an addict and proud

Addiction: what is that?
Going by the most trusted dictionary in the world, the Oxford Dictionary, it means: an obsession, compulsion, or excessive psychological dependence. the term addiction is used to describe a recurring compulsion by an individual to engage in some specific activity, despite harmful consequences, as deemed by the user himself to his individual health, mental state, or social life.

Well, I have heard and seen addicts going by the above definition.
Whether we like it or not, we are all addicted to one thing or the other. Some to more than one thing. There are of course the most common addictions, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, sex, tea, oniomania (shopping), to name but a few.

They tell us an addiction is detrimental. It can destroy us. So being the self loving humans that we are, we have come up with quite a number of solutions to curb these. We have to get the best from life don’t we? There are groups and societies such as the infamous Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA); there are centers for rehabilitation; products such as nicotine patches and so on. It’s limitless.

But do these so called remedies really work? I watch plenty of movies and read a lot. From what I have seen, these remedies have little or no effect. Chances of recovery do exist but are not 100%. One can go for ages without his/her addiction. BUT, just one little peek into the past like, nicotine scent to the smoker, or a little alcohol in the recovering alcoholics drink, a soft touch or look towards the sex addict………….. and it all comes back in one flash.

Now, the biggest problem is, once one goes back, the addiction actually doubles or rather increases. If one used to smoke a pack a day, then they can now do two. The alcoholics drink down the bar. The shoppers do more damage to their credit limits. The caffeine ones well, carry a mug around. The sex addicts… I have no words.

So why should we bother with these remedies?? And by the way, interestingly, most addicts know the dangers of their addictions. The smokers will name you all kinds of cancers some of which have just been discovered. The alcoholics will tell you that gout or liver cirrhosis can be contained; the sex addicts will tell you off the numerous vaccines to cure disease… And so on.

Reason am writing all this??? I have an addiction. A really strong one. Good news though is it doesn’t destroy me. If at all it makes me happy. Only problem is… it is not for the public. Yes, its one of those things that requires you to be anonymous. I actually tried those so called remedies and that’s how I know they don’t work. Experience is the best teacher.
So have decided, instead of running around trying to cure my self, I will embrace it and let it be part of me.

My advice, if you are a smoker, by all means, go on and smoke; an alcoholic, try out the new beer for me. A sex addict, I heard the Kama sutra has a new edition. Check it out. We all need our addictions because they always come in handy. Just like black tea in the wake of a hangover, coffee on a slow morning, Viagra on an impotent night…………
